Safety & Accuracy Disclaimer

Last updated: October 13, 2026

Zenith is a guide to the night sky, made for enjoying and learning about it. It does not replace your own judgment or care. By using Zenith, you agree to the terms below. This disclaimer is part of the Terms of Use.

1. Never look at the Sun

Never look directly at the Sun, and never point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera viewfinder at it, not even near sunrise or sunset or during a partial eclipse. Doing so can cause serious, permanent eye damage, including blindness, in seconds. Zenith shows where the Sun is only so you know which part of the sky to avoid. Observe the Sun only through filters certified to the ISO 12312-2 standard, or with a professional observatory.

2. Be safe in the dark

Stargazing usually means being outdoors at night, looking up instead of at your feet.

3. Respect property and the law

Observe only where you are allowed to be. Don't trespass on private property, park legally, and follow local rules, such as park closing hours. You are solely responsible for where you go to observe.

4. Positions and the compass can be off

Zenith calculates where things are in the sky from your location and your phone's clock, and in Live mode it relies on your phone's compass and motion sensors. Phone compasses are easily thrown off by metal, magnets (including magnetic cases and wallets), cars, buildings, and other electronics. Labels can therefore appear a few degrees, or occasionally many degrees, from the real object. Calibrate the compass when asked by moving your phone in a slow figure eight, and step away from metal objects. Zenith is not for navigation, surveying, or precise telescope pointing.

5. Weather and the sky score are estimates

The weather forecast comes from Open-Meteo, a third-party service, and can be wrong. The sky-quality score is a rough guide that combines that forecast with the Moon's phase and the light-pollution level you choose. Real conditions can differ and change quickly.

6. Night Mode

Night Mode turns the screen red and dims it to help protect your night vision. It reduces, but does not remove, the effect of the screen's light on your eyes.

7. Not an emergency service

Zenith is not an emergency or navigation tool. In an emergency, contact local emergency services directly.

8. No warranty and limitation of liability

Zenith is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent allowed by law, The Pew Estate LLC, a Florida limited liability company, and its owners, contractors, and partners are not liable for any injury, eye damage, property damage, fines, or other loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, Zenith. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited as described in the Terms of Use.
